ShiftSee vs. Instawork.

Both are shift platforms. They're built for different customers. Here's the honest breakdown.

ShiftSee is better if

  • You're a small or mid-sized shift business (under ~50 staff)
  • You want to build a trusted crew of shifters you work with repeatedly
  • You need scheduling AND emergency fills in one tool
  • You want your shifters to have negotiation power

Instawork is better if

  • You're a multi-location enterprise with centralized staffing
  • You need deep pools of one-off workers across 60+ US and Canadian metros today
  • You don't care about worker–business relationship continuity
  • You're in a dense urban market Instawork already serves

The fundamental difference

Instawork is a marketplace. ShiftSee is a relationship platform.

This is the core structural difference.

Instawork solves "I need anyone qualified, right now." They show you a pool of vetted strangers. First qualified worker to claim your shift gets it. It's fast, it works for enterprise, and it's useful when you don't have time to build relationships.

ShiftSee solves "I need someone I trust, and I want to build a crew over time." Every shifter you work with becomes part of your connected crew. Their rating, history, and preference patterns become visible to you. Over six months, you're not hiring strangers — you're scheduling people who know your kitchen, your menu, your customers.

Both models work. They serve different customers.

Small business specifics

Why small businesses pick ShiftSee.

We built ShiftSee because we kept watching small restaurants, cafés, dance studios, and hotels try to make enterprise staffing tools work for them. They never do.

A single café with 8 staff doesn't need a pool of 4,000 strangers. They need a reliable way to reach the 12 people they already trust, plus a handful of backup shifters for when the regulars can't cover. That's ShiftSee.

A 200-location restaurant group is different. They need scale, and Instawork delivers scale. We think everyone should pick the right tool.

Pricing

Both platforms charge for the transaction. The structures differ.

Instawork's pricing is negotiated per business account, typically as a markup on the shifter's hourly rate. Workers on Instawork don't pay a platform fee.

ShiftSee charges a transparent 10% on both sides — business and shifter. Total take rate is 20%. We chose this model because the worker-side fee is what funds the negotiation feature. On every other platform, workers pay nothing but have zero leverage; on ShiftSee, you pay a fee and get the right to counter-offer on every shift.

Whether this is better for you depends on what you value. Many shifters tell us the ability to negotiate outweighs the 10% fee several times over.

Who to choose

Genuinely: not every business should pick ShiftSee.

If you operate a large enterprise with centralized staffing, operate primarily in dense urban US markets, and prioritize speed of fill over continuity of relationship — Instawork is probably the right answer for you. Their product is excellent at what it does.

If you run a small or mid-sized business, want a trusted crew that compounds in value, and care about your shifters earning fairly through negotiation — we think ShiftSee is the better fit.

If you're not sure, sign up for both. They're free to try. The product that fits your operation will reveal itself within a few weeks.
